Lash extensions involve attaching artificial lashes to your own lashes with semi permanent adhesive, while a lash lift uses a perming solution to curl your natural lashes semi permanently. So, which one is right for you? Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of each option.
A lash lift is mostly known as being an alternative to eyelash extensions. Lash lifts use specially made, non-toxic chemicals on your natural lashes to break down the lashes’ structural bonds and reform them. A lash lift can transform your eyes in 45 minutes to an hour. It’s basically a semi permanant perm for your eyelashes! This allows your lashes to become curled from the root to the tip, which makes them appear longer and lusher.
Please note that while a lash lift does add curl to your lashes, it won’t actually add length or volume. They just appear to look longer and fuller because of the added curl and length. Lash lifts are more suitable for people with naturally long or medium length lashes and some fullness.
Unlike lash lifts, eyelash extensions add length and volume to your natural lashes. Eyelash extensions work by placing artificial lashes, called extensions, to your natural lashes one by one. Each lash is attached to one of your natural lashes 1-2 mm from the base of the eyelid with semi permanant adhesive.
You can imagine that this procedure takes a couple of hours based on how meticulous and tedious your lash artist needs to be. It will take any professional lash artist anywhere from 1h30 mins to 4 hours to complete a full set of lash extensions. The more natural lashes you have the longer it takes us but, we promise it’s worth the wait. You can choose various thicknesses, curl shapes, lengths, and colors in order to completely transform your eyes!
Now that you know both services and how they work, here are the major differences to help you decide between both a lash lift and lash extensions.
Lash lifts can last anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks depending on how fast your natural lash cycle is and how fast your natural lashes fall out. Eyelash extensions will last for about 3 to 4 weeks before you need to get a refill. The refills can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2h 30 minutes depending on the set of lashes you have. At the end of the day, eyelash extensions require much more upkeep and maintenance than lash lifts.
Lash lifts also require you to not touch them or apply mascara for at least 24-48 hrs after the treatment. After that you can wear mascara and eye makeup as normal but, with lash extensions, you won’t need mascara because of the added length, volume, and thickness, plus mascara on your lash extensions is a no-go!
Bottom line: if you want to get a service done once and not have to think about it again for a couple of months, then a lash lift would be your best option. if you want something that gives a dramatic effect for a longer time and don’t mind a bit of upkeep, go for eyelash extensions.
Lash lifts work only with your natural lashes. If you don’t have the fullest lashes, they’re short and sparse, lash lifts might not give you the results you’re hoping for. You must have at least a 5+ millimeter lash to get a result that is worth your money.
Remember that lash lifts don’t actually add any artificial length or volume to your natural lashes. If that’s what you’re wanting, you are better off booking for eyelash extensions. This service is great for people with sparse or short natural lashes to add what they are missing.
On the other hand, though, if you love your natural lashes and want to give them a boost, a lash lift would be perfect for you. You will look like you have been blessed with the prettiest lashes in town!
Eyelash extensions have infinite ways to customize to your specific wants and needs. You and your lash artist can decide on color, length, thickness, and curl level of your extensions to create the perfect look suited for your eyes and face. You can’t customize as easily with a lash lift, which is something to keep in mind when choosing between the two.
